What is a Leadership Style and what value does a style inventory provide?
Think of a Style as a pattern of observable and predictable behavior. So, consider a leadership style to be a leader’s preferred, or natural, approach of interacting, directing, and motivating those she or he leads.
Defining styles can help us explain or categorize behaviors that are likely to repeat themselves under similar conditions. Everyone has their own unique combination of styles and resulting behaviors that are comfortable for them, and that are acceptable to them. When individuals of differing styles interact, misunderstanding or conflicts may arise due to these differences. The more awareness we have of our own style, the more likely we are to accurately read the style of those with whom we interact, which allows us the opportunity to flex or adjust our style to get optimum results. The ConVans Leadership Styles Inventory can help with this!
For most individuals, a dominant or primary style will emerge; this is the style that comes most naturally to that individual in normal circumstances. However, it is not uncommon for individuals to have more than one dominant style. It’s really the combination of all these styles that makes each of us unique. The ConVans Leadership Styles Inventory is based on nine leadership styles and, while this list of styles is not exhaustive, the styles presented here are the most prevalent found in leaders today.
A few caveats regarding assessments: As with all assessments, our intent is to use them for learning and creating awareness. We are not suggesting these styles be used as inflexible labels, or that an individual is unable to use elements of less dominant styles. We are a unique mix of all styles. There is no right or wrong answer, and all styles have value in the right circumstances. In fact, our ultimate goal is to become fluent in all the styles and become so in-tune with others and our environment that we are able to effortlessly adapt to the situation at hand, providing the appropriate style for that situation in order to achieve optimal results.
